Putin's Proposal and Personal Life
Under the current Russian constitution, marriage is defined as a "family union based on the free consent of a man and a woman." If approved, Putin's proposed amendment would replace this language with a new definition that explicitly states that marriage is the union of a man and a woman.
Putin, who has been married twice, has previously expressed support for traditional family values. He has also criticized same-sex marriage, calling it "harmful" to society.
